About Stacey Billups
“I see your life as already artful, just waiting and ready for you to make art.”
― Toni Morrison
I am a self-taught artist based in Brooklyn. My practice explores joy, connection, reflection, and rest. Whether enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, gathering with friends, pursuing passions, or simply resting, beauty can be found in these little slices of life that connect the viewer to my subjects' humanity.
My work is primarily figurative, focusing on the diverse lives of individuals, families, and people I encounter. I am deeply committed to creating a space where the joyful moments of people of color are celebrated and seen, reflecting the richness and beauty of our experiences.
I often work with various mediums, including oil paints for their rich textures, watercolors for their fluidity, and gouache paints for their vibrant colors. This diverse range of materials allows me to examine the themes of joy, connection, reflection, and rest on a smaller, intimate scale, as seen with watercolor and gouache works on paper and broader expressions of the concept through my oil paintings.
Inspired by my own experiences and nostalgia, my most recent work delves into the joy of memories and the power of recreating narratives.
